Smart Cities: Why They Matter and What They Mean for Digital Innovation

Speaker: Léan Doody , Associate, Arup

Cities are recognized as places where innovation and growth naturally occur. However they face a significant number of challenges including:

- Providing sufficient job opportunities for their citizens
- Providing an attractive place to live in terms of health, education and environment

- Meeting and exceeding sustainability goals

While ICT has been applied within city departments for decades, a fundamental shift has occurred. New technologies such the Internet of Things now have a maturity and availability that can impact key city infrastructures including transport, supply chains, waste and food production.  This talk will describe the economic, social and environmental value argument for Smart Cities and discuss their significance as a platform for digital innovation. Finally discuss the organizational and governance steps needed to effect change.
